The House Impeaches President Donald Trump

Washington, D.C. — The House today voted to impeach President Donald Trump, citing his abuse of power in the Ukraine scandal and his obstruction of Congress as it exercised its constitutional duty to conduct oversight over the executive branch. “After months of testimony and witnesses, the House of Representatives today voted to impeach the President for his actions with regard to Ukraine. While this process has been contentious, it offers a prime example of unwavering commitment to the separation of powers and the rule of law.

“Over the past several weeks, a steady stream of witnesses from inside the administration have come forward to share firsthand knowledge of the events at issue. Numerous constitutional scholars have weighed in to say that the President’s actions warrant impeachment. Yet, the President and his lawyers chose not to present any evidence or testimony to counter the witness accounts.

“Now that the House has voted to impeach, it falls to the Senate to do what the founders intended and conduct an open, fair and comprehensive trial to determine if the President’s actions warrant removal from office. A truncated and rushed trial would be a national travesty and an affront to the Constitution and our Democracy. The integrity of the American election process in 2020 and beyond depends on the Senate taking the process seriously and placing principles above partisan politics.”
