Issue: First Amendment

Freedom of conscience and expression, so fundamental to the Framers’ constitutional design for our democracy, must entail the freedom to speak and worship (or not) in keeping with one’s values and beliefs, without government coercion or endorsement. ACS examines how we should understand the constitutional dimensions of the First Amendment in light of current debates, including those about hate speech, corporate speech, misinformation, and claims for religious exemptions from generally applicable laws.
