2013 ACS Student Convention: Gideon at 50
Student Convention Overview
On March 1-2, 2013, ACS held its first Student Convention at Stanford Law School. Using the 50th anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright as a springboard for conversation, student leaders from across the country convened to discuss the legacy of Gideon, the future of work on behalf of low income individuals and the critical role that students can play in delivering on Gideon’s promise of a more just society.
The Student Convention built on two successful years of Bay Area student convenings, which had been undertaken in partnership between ACS National, the Bay Area student and lawyer chapters and their leaders. The two-day event was highly interactive—where students were participants in the conversation, not merely audience members. Students left with real tools to advance their goals and an increased sense of the myriad ways they—and their chapters—can make a difference in one of the most important legal and policy areas of the day.
