Stopping Hate! – A Conversation with Yee Htun and Nadia Aziz
Join us for a conversation with Yee Htun of the HLS International Human Rights Law Clinic and Nadia Aziz of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law about strategies to combat hate in local communities. Ms. Htun will facilitate a discussion with Ms. Aziz about her work as the Interim Co-Director and Policy Counsel of the Stop Hate Project at Lawyers’ Committee. Ms. Htun will also share some of her reflections on her work with local communities to combat hate speech on-line in Myanmar.
The Stop Hate Project manages a resource and reporting hotline for hate incidents, works collaboratively to enhance the response of law enforcement and community organizations to hate crimes, and engages in strategic litigation and legislative action. Most recently, the Lawyers’ Committee Stop Hate Project and co-counsel Kirkland & Ellis, won a lawsuit against The Daily Stormer and white supremacists for engaging in online threats and harassment of Taylor Dumpson, the first female African American student body president of American University.
Co-sponsored by American Constitution Society – HLS Chapter and the Human Rights Program.
This event is a part of HLS’s celebration of National Pro Bono Week. Lunch from Sugar and Spice will be provided. RSVPs are helpful, but not necessary.
