A Discussion on Grants Pass v. Johnson

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on April 22, 2024, in City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson, to determine whether generally applicable laws regulating the use of public space constitute cruel and unusual punishment prohibited by the Eighth Amendment when applied to the unhoused.

On Thursday, April 11th from 12:30pm to 1:30 pm, join the Southwestern Law School Chapters of the American Constitution Society and the Homelessness Prevention Law Program for a zoom discussion on the use and regulation of public space and the challenges faced by cities and counties in addressing homelessness. We are sponsoring a discussion with two City Attorneys that contributed to amici curiae briefs submitted to SCOTUS in support of the City of Grants Pass.

Susana Alcala Wood is the City Attorney for the City of Sacramento, California, and participated in the “Local Government Legal Center” amici brief.

Pam Lee is the City Attorney for the City of Hesperia, California, and an Equity Partner in the public law firm of Aleshire & Wynder and participated in the “Thirteen California Cities” amici brief.
