Mueller Report: How far up the chain did the Trump campaign’s efforts to conspire with Russia go?

Washington, D.C. — Robert Mueller has completed his investigation into allegations that the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to sway the 2016 elections. Many people connected with Trump’s campaign have already been jailed or are on trial for lying about their contacts with Russians in 2016. Mueller has now filed his final report with President Trump’s Attorney General, William Barr, who must decide how and when to share that report’s information with Congress. Below is the statement of American Constitution Society President Caroline Fredrickson.

“The question isn’t whether members of the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to sway the 2016 elections; we already know they did. Many of Trump’s campaign staffers are in jail for lying to investigators about their contacts with Russians. Numerous others await trial. Dozens more have been indicted. We just need to know how far up the chain this lawlessness went, and we won’t be able to do that without full disclosure of the Mueller report.

“But report or no report, through his indictments and prosecutorial actions, Mueller has provided Congress with an investigative roadmap to the truth, a trail it should follow as it continues its oversight duties. Mueller can also work with committees in the House, U.S. attorneys, and state attorneys general and district attorneys to further expose any corrupt or illegal activities. It’s important to remember that there was no comparable report in the Watergate scandal and Congress was still able to root out corruption. It should do so here as well.

“From the beginning, President Trump’s approach to Mueller’s investigation has been characterized by paranoia and fear. From the outset he has sought to discredit the veteran law enforcement personnel charged with looking into this issue. If the President were truly innocent of these allegations, he would not fear what investigators might find. Yet he clearly does. If the Mueller report isn’t made public, then it falls to Congress to find out why.”
