American Constitution Society President on Nomination of Merrick B. Garland to U.S Supreme Court

Washington, D.C. – President Obama today nominated Merrick B. Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court. ACS President Caroline Fredrickson made the following statement:

“Like President Obama’s previous nominations to the Supreme Court, Chief Judge Garland is impeccably qualified to serve. His credentials cannot be questioned, he is a person of integrity and he would bring an understanding of how the world works to the nation’s highest court. These qualities will serve everyday Americans well and put the Supreme Court back at full strength. President Obama has fulfilled his constitutional duty to nominate a Supreme Court justice. It is up to the Senate to do its job, as required by the Constitution, to provide ‘advice and consent.’”

Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland currently serves on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Prior to his confirmation to the Circuit Court, Chief Judge Garland served as Principle Associate Deputy U.S. Attorney General, the Deputy Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Prosecutions Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice. Chief Judge Garland also worked in private practice and taught antitrust law at Harvard Law School.
