ACS Celebrates President Biden’s First 100 Confirmed Federal Judges

Washington, DC — The Senate confirmed Gina Méndez-Miró to the District of Puerto Rico today, representing President Biden’s 100^th confirmed federal judge.

“ACS applauds President Biden’s commitment to the federal courts and to nominating diverse, qualified candidates,” said ACS President Russ Feingold. “The President has reached the milestone of 100 confirmed federal judges sooner than either of the previous two administrations. More than that, he has made history in the diversity of his candidates, moving our federal judiciary closer to reflecting the public it serves. There is still a long way to go to achieve a multiracial judiciary, and we implore the Senate to maximize this year to confirm at least 100 more judges.”

“President Biden has an opportunity to reshape upwards of a third of the federal judiciary,” said ACS Executive Vice President Zinelle October. “He’s had 100 judges already confirmed, and there are still 113 current and known future vacancies on the federal courts. However, he will need the Senate to significantly increase its own commitment and prioritization of the courts to fill these vacancies. The Senate can immediately demonstrate its commitment in this regard by eliminating the blue slip tradition that is ripe for abuse. Our federal courts are on the frontlines of nearly every policy issue that the White House and Senate majority care about. Confirming diverse, qualified judges who are committed to the rule of law and to vindicating our fundamental freedoms must be a top priority.
