ACS Washington, DC: Financial Inequities in an Unequal World
Join the ACS Washington, DC Lawyer Chapter for a panel discussion on inequity. Inequity is layered, diverse, systemic, and individual. All three of our speakers consider inequity from three discrete (and yet highly relational) perspectives. This panel will include a short presentation from each speaker followed by an opportunity to engage with the audience in Q&A on these dynamic topics.
Featuring
- Â Professor Bridget J. Crawford (University Distinguished Professor, Professor of Law, Elizabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University) considers the "Pink Tax," an umbrella term for actual and figurative taxes associated with women or the products or services women use. She addresses the need for legislative reform, but also that legislative reform alone will not solve the underlying problem.
- Dean Allison Anna Tait (Associate Dean for Faculty Development, Professor of Law, University of Richmond School of Law) will be speaking about family trees, family finances, and family inequality. Specifically, Dean Tait will explore the fact that both low-income and high-wealth families seek more inclusive and forgiving definitions of "family" than the narrow, marital one generally offered by lawmakers. Although high-wealth families have manipulated and influenced the lawmaking process to produce incredibly expansive definitions of the family in the areas that matter most to the ultra-rich, low-income families rarely succeed in obtaining more capacious definitions.
- Professor Victoria J. Haneman (Frank J. Kellegher Professor of Trusts & Estates, Professor of Law, Creighton University School of Law) considers the reality that the average American likes to disguise aging, cloak herself in the illusion of immortality, and ignore the inevitability of death. This sheltering from the organic and necessary end of the life cycle has created consumer illiteracy that impedes consumer access to innovative death technologies and drives costs.
