ACS & Outlaws Presents: Legal Advocacy for Religious Freedom and LGBTQ Rights After Fulton v. City of Philadelphia

In its decision in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia this summer, the Supreme Court considered a Philadelphia ordinance under which the city refused to contract with Catholic Social Services because of CSS's policy of not certifying same-sex couples to be foster parents. The Court found that the ordinance was not neutral and generally applicable because it allowed for exceptions to the anti-discrimination requirement at the sole discretion of the Commissioner for the Philadelphia Commission on Human Rights. In this panel, we will hear from three religious freedom and LGBTQ rights experts about the significance of the case for the future. 

Panelists include Mary Bonauto (Civil Rights Director at GLAD and one of the oralists in Obergefell), Lindsey Kaley (Staff Attorney at the ACLU's Center for Liberty), and Michael Vazquez (currently Senior Communications Analyst at USAID for the Local, Faith, and Transformative Partnerships Hub; previously the Religion & Faith Program Director at the Human Rights Campaign).
