Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) Siscusses the Alito Nomination at the University of Chicago Student Chapter on 11/22/05

On November 22, 2005 the University of Chicago chapter of the American Constitution Society welcomed Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to their campus to discuss the recent nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. The Chicago Maroon, a student newspaper, reported Senator Durbin as saying that “[a]nyone taking over for O’Connor. . . could single-handedly determine the legal stance on the death penalty, immigrants’ rights, environmental protection, church-state separation, foreign international law, and the right to privacy—which includes women’s reproductive rights.” Durbin spoke to a packed audience and in a lighter moment, students sang to him in celebration of his 61st birthday.
