ACS Hosts Press Briefing on Davenport v. Washington Education Association & Washington v. Washington Education Association
On Thursday, January 4, 2007, ACS hosted a press briefing on two Supreme Court cases, Davenport v. Washington Education Association & Washington v. Washington Education Association, which challenge whether the First Amendment rights of labor unions are infringed by a state campaign finance law requiring labor unions to obtain affirmative consent from non-member employees before using for political activities the fees that they pay to the union. Advocates from both sides of the issue presented their perspectives on the cases and previewed some of the points likely to be raised when the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on Wednesday, January 10, 2007.
The panel featured:
- Laurence E. Gold, Associate General Counsel, American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL- CIO);
Of Counsel, Lichtman, Trister & Ross, PLLC - James Bopp, Jr., General Counsel, James Madison Center for Free Speech; Member of the Firm, Bopp, Coleson & Bostrom
- Moderator, Amanda Frost, Assistant Professor of Law, Washington College of Law, American University
- ACS has created a resources page on several Supreme Court cases for the 2006-2007 October term. The resources page contains ACSBlog previews of the cases, streaming video of pre-argument panel discussions by experts, and links to the Court's opinions.
